Abstract: In this talk I will critically review the role played by holography in our current understanding of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) formed in heavy-ion collisions. Outstanding challenges regarding the hydrodynamic behavior of the QGP will be presented, considering the dynamical inclusion of critical phenomena and, especially, concerning the modeling of the collective behavior displayed by small collision systems such as proton-nucleus and proton-proton collisions. New opportunities to improve the holographic modeling of the QGP, in and out-of-equilibrium, will be discussed.
